Abstract
During the 2018-2019 season (September 2, 2018?August 31, 2019), respiratory specimens (throat swabs) were collected from approximately eight patients every week with influenza-like illnesses and acute respiratory tract infections from 52 private clinics in the Republic of Korea. Subsequently, multiplex real-time RT-PCR was performed to detect influenza viruses (A, B, A(H1N1)pdm09, A(H3N2), B-Victoria lineage, and B-Yamagata lineage) at 17 Public Health and Environment Research Institutes (PHERIs). Among the real-time RT-PCR positive specimens, 10% were randomly selected and cultured for virus isolation. Heamagglutination Inhibition Assay (HIA) or Focus Reduction Assay (FRA) was used to perform antigenic characterizations of the viruses and NA (Neuraminidase) genetic analysis was used to monitor antiviral drug-resistant viruses. During the 2018-2019 flu season, 11,862 specimens were collected and diagnosed by multiplex real-time RT-PCR. As a result, 1,814 (15.3%) cases tested positive for influenza. Of these positive cases, 1,139 (62.8%) and 675 (37.2%) cases were confirmed to be influenza A viruses and influenza B viruses, respectively. Of the influenza A viruses, A(H1N1)pdm09 was detected in 760 (66.7%) cases and A(H3N2) was detected in 379 (33.3%) cases. A(H1N1)pdm09 isolates similar with A/ Michigan/45/2015 genetically and antigenically. A(H3N2) was divided into two subclades. The antigenicity of 3C.2a.1 subclade was similar with A/Singapore/INFIMH-16-00192016, while that of 3C.2a.2 subclade was distinct with the vaccine strain. Most of the influenza B isolates belonged to the Victoria lineage 1A-3¥Ä (162-164) which was distinct with B/ Colorado/06/2017.
